"Laney Haney: The Little Painter” is a children’s book that encourages children to have the confidence to try and fail, especially when something feels overwhelming, and fosters creativity. The story follows Laney Haney as she finds the confidence to paint a picture and learns the value of practice. The color palette contains bright, primary colors, mainly blue, yellow, and pink. Feminine colors such as pink and purple are used to be attractive to young girls. The illustrations are done in a watercolor style because it is the most recognizable form of painting to children. The illustrations are based on basic, gently rounded shapes and the form is suggested by light linework that has a sophisticated variation in stroke weight. Simple illustrations allow children to identify with the book because it looks similar to something that they themselves would draw, yet the pages are skillfully illustrated. The imagery in the book resonates with children because they often feel small in a world that is built for adults, and it encourages them to interact with the world anyway; this is shown by Laney using a stool and using two hands to hold her large paintbrush. The typeface is PF Reminder, which is a sans-serif typeface that resembles simple marker handwriting. The strokes are very soft and rounded and communicate a friendly character which matches the attitude of the rest of the book.
