Typographic Portrait

Project type

Illustration

Date

January 2024

Size

10"x10"

This typographic self-portrait is created entirely from the letterforms that make up the name “Marhin”. One typeface that was chosen was P22 Mackinac, which is a serif typeface with organic, graceful strokes and gentle serifs. The second typeface was Myriad Variable Concept, which is a humanist sans serif typeface with many different weights included in the family. I focused on the most prominent features of my face that would aid the viewer in identifying myself as the subject of the portrait; this specifically included the shadows and highlights of my eyes, the shape of my nose, my mouth, and the darkness of my hair. I built high contrast into the portrait with areas of complete black and complete white to give the recognizable form more visual interest. The letterforms are reduced to a very small size in order to maintain density throughout the heavy areas of the portrait. The composition that was created reflects a calm and refined yet open and friendly personality through a gentle smile, rounded features, and sparkling eyes.
